Unique exhibition of clothing heritage set for Kinsale Library  

Kinsale Cultural and Heritage Society is delighted to promote the upcoming exhibition on our clothing heritage that runs at Kinsale Library from April 17th to May 13th.

Supported by Creative Ireland, ‘A Stitch in Time: The Clothes We Wore, The Future We Weave’ is the culmination of a series of workshops led by Cork County Council’s Heritage Specialist in Residence Shannon Forde. Held in local libraries and primary schools, the workshops explored themes of heritage and sustainability, focusing on crafts, transport and food to uncover the ways in which our ancestors were living sustainably.

Of course, Shannon is a founding member of the society and still plays a vital role, despite her busy schedule, which also sees her as the curator and manager at the Lusitania Museum and Signal Tower at the Old Head of Kinsale

A graduate of both UCC and Maynooth, completing an MA in Irish History at the latter Institute. In addition to having previously worked for the OPW at Charles Fort, she also received much acclaim for her publication on the War of Independence in Kinsale and District, entitled: Don’t Forget Me Now, Stories from the War of Independence in Kinsale.

It is being described as an inspiring new exhibition that explores Ireland’s rich textile heritage The exhibition ‘A Stitch in Time: The Clothes We Wore, The Future We Weave’ revisits practices from the past to inspire a more sustainable future.

Treasured clothing traditions from the past, including the Kinsale Cloak and a variety of pieces from the Mizen Spinning and Textile Group, will be on display, as well as tools such as spinning wheels and looms. Visitors will also discover a range of historical photographs, personal stories and handcrafted items, alongside insights from primary school children on sustainable living.

This exhibition is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9.30am to 5.30pm at Kinsale Library.
