1985 Kinsale and Its London Links

In November 1985, a large group of Kinsale’s residents departed the town to travel to London, as part of the Kinsale and District Emigrants Association.

Recorded in the pages of The Southern Star, the article described the excursion as ‘Success of London Social’.

The Kinsale contingent departed from the Armada public house as they travelled on Slattery’s bus on an overnight ferry, arriving in London at 7.30 pm.

The Kinsale delegation was led by Finbarr Tierney, who chaired the local association at the time.

The HQ for the weekend’s gathering was at The Crown, on the High Road, Leytonstone, run by Tom and Mandy Fogerty, who have since returned to live in Kinsale.

Attracting over 150 people, the Kinsale contingent included the late Eugene Gillan, the late Mary O’Brien, the late Nicky Searls, Eileen Collins, and Dermot Ryan, who represented Kinsale Town Council.

It seems those who travelled across the Irish Sea enjoyed their gathering with Kinsale’s former residents in London, as another ex-pat, Tim Desmond, provided the music.
