The late Jimmy Cummins
Firstly, the Wild Geese Festival of 1976 attracted a group from Nigeria. However, the picture also features the legendary Jimmy Cummins (fondly known as Swinging Jimmy). He ran the White House with his wife, Eithne. He was a founding member of the Good Food Circle and, despite being a Kilkenny fanatic, he helped put Kinsale on the map.
A number of familiar faces and remember Dan the Post
There are a couple of familiar faces in the picture from Riverstick Sports in 1976. No doubt they were brought to the event by the late Dan O’Donovan, Dunderrow, who was affectionately known as Dan the Post. Dan encouraged many kids of that generation to participate in athletics and he is fondly remembered. His son, Denis, seen in the picture, is the Valley Rovers delegate to the South East Board.
Teenagers of 1976
You can figure out some of these teenagers from 1976, many of whom are still living in the area. One of the notable absences is the late Louise Tobin, who sadly passed away. Her father, Frank, was the Creamery manager, a site now occupied by SuperValu. Her brother Brian played with Cork U21s and won three consecutive All-Ireland titles, as well as a club All-Ireland Championship with Blackrock.
